Perth Winter Weddings: Why the “Off-Season” Might Be Your Best Decision

I need to get something off my chest: Perth’s “winter” barely qualifies as winter. Coming from someone who’s shot in actual cold (Melbourne in July, anyone?), Perth winter is mild, moody, and honestly? Some of the most beautiful light I’ve ever worked with.

Yet most couples automatically default to autumn or spring weddings because that’s what everyone tells them to do. And look - those are beautiful seasons. But if you’re planning a wedding between June and August in Perth, I want you to know something: you’re not settling. You might actually be making the smartest call of your entire wedding planning journey.

Here’s why. From a photographer who’s done this across every season.

The Light Is Genuinely Better

This might sound counterintuitive, but hear me out.

In summer, Perth’s sun is high and harsh. Between 10am and 4pm, outdoor photography is brutal - squinting eyes, sharp shadows under noses and chins, blown-out highlights. The “good light” window in summer is maybe 60-90 minutes around sunset. Which means your timeline is tight and there’s very little room for delays.

Winter? The sun sits lower in the sky all day long. That golden, directional light that summer only gives you for a brief moment at the end of the day? Winter gives you that for hours. The shadows are softer. The tones are warmer. And the sky does things - clouds, layers, colour gradients - that a clear blue summer sky simply can’t match.

Some of my absolute favourite images from the last nine years were shot on overcast winter days. Cloud cover works like a giant natural softbox. It wraps around faces evenly, eliminates harsh shadows, and creates this beautiful, even illumination that is incredibly flattering for skin tones.

The Venues Are Cheaper and More Available

This is the practical bit that’s hard to ignore.

Perth’s most popular wedding venues - the Swan Valley wineries, the coastal venues, the estate properties - charge peak-season pricing from October through April. Winter rates can be 20-40% less at many venues. Some offer midweek winter specials that are even more attractive.

And availability? You’re not competing with 15 other couples for the same Saturday in October. Winter dates give you more choice, more flexibility, and less stress in the planning process.

Same venue. Same food. Same photographer. Less money. More options. I don’t know about you, but that maths works for me.

Your Vendor Team Is More Available Too

This includes photographers. Autumn and spring Saturdays book out months in advance. My winter calendar, on the other hand? More breathing room. Which means I can often be more flexible with timing, offer longer coverage, and give your wedding the attention it deserves without the back-to-back bookings that peak season demands.

Same goes for florists, celebrants, makeup artists, DJs - everyone is more available, more relaxed, and frankly, more excited. There’s something about a winter wedding that brings out the best in the whole team.

What About Rain?

Let’s address the elephant in the room. Yes, Perth gets most of its rain between June and August. Average winter rainfall is about 120-180mm per month. But here’s what most people don’t realise: Perth’s rain comes in bursts. You’ll get an intense downpour for an hour or two, followed by clearing skies and sometimes the most spectacular sunset you’ve ever seen.

I’ve photographed winter weddings where it poured during the ceremony (they had a stunning indoor backup), then cleared for portraits an hour later with this dramatic post-rain sky that looked like a painting. You honestly can’t plan for that kind of beauty. It just happens.

My rain guarantee: I carry weather-sealed gear, portable lighting, and I always - always - scout indoor backup options at every venue before the day. If it rains, we adapt. We don’t panic. Some of the best wedding photos I’ve delivered were rainy-day shoots.

Winter Wedding Photography Tips

If you’re going for it (and I think you should), here’s how to make your winter wedding photograph beautifully:

Embrace the mood

Winter weddings suit rich, warm tones. Think burgundy, deep green, gold, copper. Candlelight, fairy lights, and warm ambient lighting create an intimate, romantic atmosphere that photographs incredibly well. This aligns perfectly with the 2026 wedding trend towards jewel tones and “old money” styling - it’s all very Perth-winter-friendly.

Plan your timeline around the light

In June-July, Perth sunset is around 5:15-5:30pm. That’s earlier than you might think. If outdoor portraits are important to you, we need to schedule them before sunset, which usually means a mid-afternoon ceremony or a first-look session earlier in the day. I walk through this timing with every couple during our consultation.

Have a Plan B (and make it a good one)

Choose a venue with strong indoor spaces. Perth has gorgeous options - the Heritage buildings in Fremantle, the wine barrel rooms in the Swan Valley, the industrial-chic spaces in Leederville and Northbridge. An indoor ceremony can be just as beautiful as an outdoor one when the space has character.

Layer up (stylishly)

This one’s more fashion advice than photography advice, but brides in winter wraps, fur stoles, or tailored jackets look absolutely stunning. Grooms in heavier fabrics and textured suits photograph beautifully against moody backdrops. And the getting-ready photos with cosy robes and warm drinks? Adorable.

Real Perth Winter Wedding Moments

A few of my favourite memories from winter weddings I’ve shot:

  • A couple who had their ceremony in the barrel room at a Swan Valley winery while rain drummed on the tin roof. The sound added this incredibly intimate, cocooning feeling. Their guests were wiping tears. It was one of the most emotional ceremonies I’ve ever witnessed.

  • An elopement at Cottesloe Beach in July. The sky was slate grey with a strip of gold on the horizon. Just the two of them, barefoot on the sand, laughing into the wind. Those photos still give me goosebumps.

  • A multicultural wedding in South Perth where the reception’s candlelit tables, combined with the city skyline twinkling through the windows, created this warm golden glow that was pure magic.

FAQs About Winter Weddings in Perth

Q: Is it too cold for a winter wedding in Perth?

A: Perth’s winter temperatures sit around 8-18°C. For context, that’s warmer than a typical spring day in Melbourne or Sydney. With the right venue and some stylish layering, your guests will be perfectly comfortable. Most Perth winter days are genuinely pleasant - crisp, clear, and sunny between the rain systems.

Q: Can we still do outdoor photos in winter?

A: Absolutely. The light is beautiful, and we just need to plan the timing carefully around sunset (which is earlier in winter). Even on overcast days, the soft, diffused light is incredibly flattering. I always have backup indoor locations prepped, but in my experience, we get outdoor shots at most winter weddings.

Q: Will the rain ruin our photos?

A: Rain creates some of the most dramatic, emotional photography you’ll see. Reflections on wet surfaces, moody skies, the intimacy of huddling under an umbrella together - these moments photograph beautifully. My gear is weather-sealed, and I carry clear umbrellas specifically for these shots.

Q: Are winter weddings really cheaper?

A: In most cases, yes. Many Perth venues offer reduced rates for June-August bookings, and midweek winter weddings can be significantly more affordable. Vendors across the board tend to be more flexible with pricing in winter. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s a strong trend.

Thinking About a Winter Wedding?

Whether you’re deliberately choosing winter or it’s just when your date works out - I want you to feel excited about it. Not like you’re compromising. Because you’re not. You’re getting something different, something moodier and more intimate, and honestly? Something that a lot of couples wish they’d been brave enough to choose.

Let’s have a chat about your vision and I’ll show you how we can make your winter wedding look and feel absolutely incredible.
